💎 Hidden Gem: Audlem Flight (Shropshire Union Canal, Audlem)

Where the Shropshire Union Canal climbs out of the Cheshire Plain, Audlem strings together 15 consecutive locks over roughly 1.5 miles, lifting (and dropping) boats by about 93ft.

It’s a lovely slice of living canal heritage: slow boats, working paddles and balance beams, and interpretation panels that explain what’s going on as you wander the towpath.

Start in the village and amble the towpath past cottages, bridges and classic canalside pubs. It’s easy, photogenic walking with plenty of spots to pause and watch a lock-through (you’ll often get a friendly wave from a crew). If you’re boating, there are signed visitor moorings in the heart of the flight, handy for exploring Audlem’s cafes and shops.

From spring through autumn weekends, you can hop aboard the Audlem Lass volunteer-run water taxi between Lock 15 and Overwater Marina – a charming little shuttle that delights kids (and grown-ups). It typically runs Easter to October on weekends and bank holidays; check current times before you go.

If you want to make a circuit, there are short circulars that combine towpath, lanes and field paths, keeping things gentle but scenic – perfect for an unhurried half-day out with countryside views all the way.

❤️ Why We Love It: A proper Cheshire slow-adventure: easy towpath strolling, boats in motion, and village treats within a few lock-gates.
