💎 Hidden Gem: Marbury Country Park (Northwich)

Tucked inside the Northwich Woodlands, Marbury blends old-estate charm (lime avenues, arboretum, community orchard) with wide waterside views across Budworth Mere to Great Budworth’s church…proper storybook Cheshire. Families get easy paths, lots of benches and picnic spots, plus a good play area near the main lawns.

Nature lovers can dip into the Marbury Reedbed boardwalk and the bird hides on the mere – expect grebes, tufted duck, herons and wintering wildfowl when the season turns. It’s a gentle way to introduce kids to birding without a long stomp.

Access is straightforward (pay-and-display parking close to paths; a mix of accessible routes and rougher woodland trails). For a bit more adventure, link Marbury to the Anderton Boat Lift on a way-marked 3-mile/5.6km circular – woodland, meadows, and canal towpath with a big industrial “wow” at halfway.

Make a half-day of it: slow loop by the water, playground time, then finish with ice creams when the sun’s out, or cross to Anderton Nature Park if little legs still have gas. It’s simple, scenic and stress-free.

Practical bits

  • Start/Parking: Marbury Country Park main car park (CW9 6AT, pay & display)

  • Distance/Time: Park & potter 1-2 miles or a 3-mile loop to Anderton (2+ hours)

  • Grade/Terrain: Easy; mostly firm estate/forest paths with a few short slopes; can be muddy after rain

  • Facilities: Play area, picnic spots; hides/boardwalk at reedbed

❤️ Why we love it: Great views, easy wins, and loads of autumnal nature moments.
