πŸ’Ž Hidden Gem: Cuddington Rail Trail Circular

A neat, low-effort loop with a bit of everything: quiet green lanes, ponds and woodland edges – with a dash of railway history. It starts right at Cuddington Railway Station (Manchester platform side), so it’s perfect if you want to go car-free. You’ll even glimpse the start of the Whitegate Way before the route swings into field paths and village lanes.

This is a short one (4.5km) but varied: kissing gates, a few stiles, steps, and a short, steeper pull up to the line. Expect some narrow paths (muddy after rain) and short stretches on minor roads without verges, so single-file is the order of the day with kids.

It’s not wheelchair-accessible and not recommended for large groups, but works brilliantly for families who like a bit of gentle adventure.

There are a couple of busy-road crossings (A49 and Norley Road) then you’re back into green corners: a board-straight lane by a stream, reedbeds, a big ornamental pond and a handy bench with views of an impressive house. Finish near the station with a well-earned refuel at The White Barn pub just by the entrance.

Arriving by train keeps it easy and sustainable; arriving by car, the station side streets work fine outside peak commuter times. Bring a towel for paws and boots if it’s been wet (those field edges hold the mud!).

Practical bits

  • Start/Parking: Cuddington Railway Station (Manchester platform side)

  • Distance/Time: 4.5km Β· allow 1-1.5 hours (family pace)

  • Grade/Terrain: Easy-moderate; narrow paths, steps, short steep section; 3 stiles, 4 kissing gates; can be muddy

  • Roads/Crossings: A49 & Norley Road (busy, cross with care); short sections on minor roads without verges

  • Dogs: Welcome; on leads near livestock/roads; expect stiles

  • Refreshments: The White Barn pub by the station entrance

❀️ Why we love it: Bite-size countryside with β€œproper walk” features – stiles, views and a story, right off the train.

That’s it for this week.
