💎 Hidden Gem: Malpas Border-Country Loop + fireside pint in the village

If you want a proper hike that feels like you’ve escaped Cheshire without actually going far, start in Malpas and head out on a border-country loop that mixes rolling farmland, quiet lanes and countryside. It’s the sort of landscape where you’ll spend half the walk saying “how is this still Cheshire?”

A cracking option is the Hampton Post + Sandstone Trail + Malpas circular – it’s 13.2km with around 328m of ascent, and most people take about 3.5-4 hours, so it lands firmly in “proper hike” territory rather than a gentle potter.

The vibe is simple: wide-open fields, hedgerows, the odd muddy section that keeps it honest, and enough climbing to justify that post-walk feed. You’re also right on the Shropshire/Wales border-country edge, which is why it feels properly rural, properly quickly.

Finish back in Malpas and you’ve got two strong reward options: The Lion at Malpas for a full pub lunch and a sit-by-the-fire vibe (they lean hard into walkers and have proper long opening hours), or The Old Fire Station Cafe Bar if you’d rather do coffee/cake/brunch without the full pub commitment.

Practical bits

  • Distance: 13.2km / ~8.2 miles (circular)

  • Time: allow 3.5-4 hours (plus pub time – obviously)

  • Difficulty/terrain: moderate; steady climbs; expect mud after rain

  • Start point: Malpas village centre (easy to build in a pub finish)

❤️ Why we love it: It’s a nice “earned your pint” loop with great countryside, a mill detour if you fancy it, then straight back to a cracking pub.
