💎 Hidden Gem: Rivacre Valley Local Nature Reserve, Ellesmere Port
Rivacre Valley is a proper local nature reserve in the old-fashioned sense – the kind of place that exists for the community around it rather than for visitors from further afield, and that’s exactly why it’s worth the detour.
The valley follows the Rivacre Brook through a mix of ancient woodland and open meadow, with Church Wood separated from the rest of the park by Ellesmere Port Golf Club. Spring is when it’s at its most spectacular – carpets of bright yellow celandines and delicate white wood anemones give way to bluebells, filling the woodland air with that unmistakable scent.
By summer the meadows are at their colourful best and perfect for a picnic, and if you’re feeling energetic there’s a permanent orienteering course built into the reserve. Keep your eyes on the brook itself – kingfishers hunt for eels along its length, and a flash of electric blue is far more common here than most people expect.

The standard circular route takes you from the Rivacre Road car park through the woodland, crosses Rivacre Road into Clayhill Wood, follows the brook through meadows, loops around the edge of the golf course, then back through the woods to the start.
Around 2.8 miles, mostly flat, well-marked throughout – genuinely difficult to get lost given how many connecting paths there are if you fancy exploring further.
Practical bits:
Start: Rivacre Valley Country Park car park, Rivacre Road, Ellesmere Port CH66 1SS (free parking)
Distance: 2.8 miles circular
Time: 1-1.5 hours at a relaxed pace
Terrain: Mostly flat, firm paths, can be muddy in woodland sections after rain. One short steep section near the end.
Dogs: Welcome, off-lead in places, but keep on lead around the golf course
Getting there: Just off junction 7 of the M53. Overpool train station is close by.
The stop: The Halfway House, Chester Road, Childer Thornton CH66 5PG – a historic coaching inn dating back to the 1770s, just west of the park, with a charming interior and a pleasant garden for warmer days.
