π Hidden Gem: Bunbury Locks & Mill
Bunbury doesn’t shout about itself, and that’s exactly the appeal. This is a proper working village walk, three pubs, a cafΓ©, a Co-op and a chippy along the main street, with a genuine slice of canal engineering and 700 years of milling history sitting just a mile up the road. It’s the kind of walk where you’ll have the towpath mostly to yourself, even on a Saturday.
The main event is the Bunbury Staircase Locks on the historic Chester Canal, a rare “staircase” pair where two locks share a gate, so you can watch boats descend side by side, a proper bit of canal theatre if you time it right.
From there the route loops past Bunbury Mill, a working watermill with machinery dating back centuries (there’s been a mill on this site for at least 1,000 years), before winding back through fields and quiet lanes into the village, with the church tower guiding you home.
It’s an easy add-on if you’ve already got Bunbury Watermill’s open day in your diary this month, walk the loop first, then reward yourself with a proper pub lunch. The Yew Tree Inn in the village even publishes its own walking guide covering this route and a few longer variations, so it’s clearly a local favourite rather than a hidden secret to them, just to newcomers.
Practical bits:
Start point: Bunbury village (no dedicated car park at the locks themselves, so park in the village and walk up)
Route: Bunbury Locks & Mill loop, roughly 3-4 miles, easy-to-moderate, allow 1.5-2 hours; the Yew Tree Inn publishes its own free walking guide with shorter (2.5 mile) and longer (nearly 6 mile) variations
Terrain: Flat field paths, country lanes and canal towpath, can be muddy after rain, not buggy-friendly in wetter months
Dogs: Welcome on a lead
Refreshments: The Yew Tree Inn in the village for food and ales, or time your visit for a Bunbury Watermill open Sunday and combine the two
Thatβs it for this week.
