If you’re happy to hop just over the Cheshire border, the Mam Tor circular walk is one of the best-value days out you can give yourself for the price of a National Trust car park ticket. Starting from the Mam Tor National Trust car park, you’re on the summit in minutes, with huge views over Edale and Hope Valley that feel completely disproportionate to the effort.
From there, the classic 3-mile Mam Tor circuit loops along the Great Ridge before dropping back via the old “broken road” and past the entrance to Blue John Cavern. It’s short enough to do with older kids or less-keen walkers, but still feels like a proper hill day with a trig point, wide skies and a real sense of being “up high”.
On clear days, you can see wave after wave of Peak District hills rolling out in every direction. On moodier days, low cloud and wind give it a wild, almost coastal feel. Either way, you finish with tired legs, rosy cheeks and the smug satisfaction of having done a “big walk” without needing a full expedition.
Practical bits
-
Start/parking: Mam Tor National Trust car park (Mam Nick, S33 8WA)
-
Distance: ~3 miles / 4.8km circular (classic NT route)
-
Time: 2-3 hours at an easy pace with stops
-
Grade: Moderate – short steep ascent then undulating ridge
-
Terrain: Flagstone paths, stone steps, grassy tracks; can be exposed and very windy
❤️ Why We Love It: I’ve done this one many times; it’s a great intro walk that’s just challenging enough with “proper mountain” views for a bite-sized walk that most reasonably fit families can tackle.
That’s it for this week.
