Ghosts, Ghouls and Great Days Out

Half-term has landed and the county has gone full Halloween. Tatton Park has skeletons lurking in the gardens, Quarry Bank is overrun with scarecrows and the National Waterways Museum is running free ghost tours. If you’d rather keep it grown-up, there’s Treacle Market in Macclesfield, the Crewe 10K and a Halloween cabaret in Chester.

Let’s dive in!

Are you looking for a space to talk and find your way?

You may find yourself putting others first, struggling in relationships, or wondering why the same feelings keep returning. I’m Grace and I run Cheshire Therapy and Counselling in Northwich. I offer face-to-face therapy locally and online across the UK.

Grace, Cheshire Therapy and Counselling Calm, comfortably furnished therapy room in Northwich

I believe many of our difficulties make sense when we understand the experiences and relationships that have shaped us. The ways we have learnt to cope or adapt earlier in life may once have helped us but can now leave us repeating patterns that no longer help us.

Therapy offers a space for you to slow down, feel heard and explore what’s happening beneath the surface. Together we can make sense of your thoughts, your feelings and the relationships around you.

You don’t need to arrive with everything figured out. We work at your pace and build a relationship where you can explore what matters most to you.

If you’re curious about therapy, I offer a free no-obligation introductory call. It’s an opportunity to ask questions, share a little and get a feel for whether working together would be right for you.

💎 Hidden Gem: Hare Hill, Over Alderley

Most people sail past Hare Hill on the way to Alderley Edge, which is a shame, because it’s one of the calmest corners of East Cheshire. It’s a walled garden with a pergola built from the old glasshouse frame, wrapped in a wooded garden and open parkland.

The walled garden is the star. Look out for the two wire horse sculptures by Christopher Hobbs, commissioned by Colonel Charles Brocklehurst as a tribute to his twin brother Patrick, who died in a riding accident. It’s a lovely little story to tell the kids.

This half-term there’s a free “Escape into Autumn” spotter trail (Garden admission applies) Wed to Sun, 24 Oct to 1 Nov, 10:30am to 4:30pm. No trail sheet or booking needed, just follow the hint boards. Free Nature Packs are also on loan from the Welcome Building if the kids want to be nature detectives.

For a longer day, a permissive path crosses farmland to Alderley Edge. Sources put it at 1.5 to 2 miles each way, and it’s your pub-lunch route if you want to turn the garden into a proper walk.

Practical bits:

  • Start point: Hare Hill Welcome Building and car park, Over Alderley. The postcode SK10 4PY lands you about 109 yards west of the car park, so look for the brown sign and the National Trust welcome sign on the B5087.

  • Opening: Wed to Sun, 10:30am to 5pm, last entry 4pm. Closed Mon and Tue

  • Cost: Per-person admission includes parking. Adult £10.50 (£9.50 without Gift Aid), child 5 to 17 £5.30 (£4.75), under 5s free, family of 2 adults and up to 3 children £26.20 (£23.75). Free for National Trust members.

  • Terrain: Mostly level paths through the garden, with a few steps but a step-free route around. The permissive path to Alderley Edge crosses livestock farmland, so wellies are a good idea.

  • Accessibility: Blue Badge parking, an accessible toilet, a level route, and a manual wheelchair and Tramper mobility vehicle to borrow from the Welcome Building.

  • Dogs: Assistance dogs only in the gardens.

  • Food: No café or tea room. The Welcome Building sells takeaway tea, coffee and ice cream, and there are benches and a lawn in the walled garden if you bring a picnic.

  • Getting there: Nearest stations are Alderley Edge and Prestbury, both 2.5 miles away. There’s no coach parking.
