💎 Hidden Gem: Countess of Chester Country Park (Chester)

Tucked just behind the Countess of Chester Hospital, this 19 hectare green patch turns a routine errand into a proper dose of countryside. Meadows, young woodland and canal-side stretches make it feel surprisingly wild for somewhere only minutes from the city centre.

In winter, it really earns its stripes. A big chunk of the park is on wide, surfaced tarmac paths with gentle gradients, so buggies, scooters and wheelchairs all cope well. Typical family loops are around 1.5-2 miles in 45-60 minutes, with waymarkers, bug hotels and little nature “missions” to keep kids moving.

It is a genuine community space too. Chester parkrun sets off from here every Saturday, and there are regular health walks and outdoor sessions, but you can just as easily potter round with the dog or squeeze in a quick head-clearer between school runs.

When everywhere else is a mud bath, those hard paths mean you can still get out without wrecking your boots.

Practical bits

  • Start/parking: Main car park off Countess Way by the hospital, Chester CH1 4ED. Pay and display Mon-Fri, free at weekends.

  • Distance: Typical family loop 1.5-2 miles, 45-60 mins at an easy pace.

  • Grade: Easy, mostly level with a few short, gentle slopes.

  • Terrain: Mostly tarmac paths with optional grassy tracks that can be muddy after rain.

  • Dogs: Very popular with dog walkers; dogs welcome with plenty of space to roam where appropriate.

  • Facilities: No toilets in the park itself; hospital cafés and loos are a short walk away, with benches dotted along the paths.

❤️ Why we love it: A zero-faff winter walk with pram-friendly paths, views and just enough wildness to feel like a proper escape from town.

That’s it for this week.
