💎 Hidden Gem: Helsby Hill & Woodhouse Hillfort Loop

A bite-sized adventure with big-screen views. Start at Helsby Quarry car park, climb through pine and oak to the rocky top of Helsby Hill, then cross to the ramparts of Woodhouse Hillfort on the Sandstone Ridge. It feels wild, but you’re minutes from cafés and trains.

Kids will love the scrambly steps, waymarkers and trig-point selfies. Grown-ups get huge panoramas across the Dee estuary to Wales. In autumn, the ridge glows with bracken and birch.

The loop is short but contains steps, roots and brief road sections – perfect for a brisk after-school blast or golden-hour stroll.

• Start/Parking: Helsby Quarry Car Park, Alvanley Rd, Helsby (WA6 area)

• Distance/Time: 4.5 km loop – allow 1-1.5 hours (family pace)

• Grade/Terrain: Easy-moderate; steps, roots, short steep pulls; can be muddy after rain

• Dogs: Welcome on leads near livestock and roads
