💎 Hidden Gem: Abbeywood Gardens, near Delamere

Everyone knows Delamere Forest. Far fewer people pull into the car park just down the road on the A556 and discover Abbeywood Gardens, and that’s exactly why it’s worth going.

Set across 45 acres, Abbeywood feels like you’ve been let into a private estate. There are six acres of formal and informal gardens, a 1.2-mile wildlife walk through 27 acres of mature and newly planted woodland, and a seven-acre arboretum stocked with rare species you can’t help admiring even if you can’t name them. Spring is its best season – the woodland is coming alive, the formal beds are in early bloom, and it’s quiet enough that you can actually hear the birds.

The Garden Café serves proper homegrown and locally sourced food, from morning coffee through to a full three-course lunch in the orangery. Unhurried, civilised, and a genuinely lovely place to spend a couple of hours. Pair it with a walk into Delamere itself and you’ve got a half-day sorted.

Practical bits:

  • Location: Abbeywood Gardens, Forest Road, Delamere, Northwich, CW8 2HS

  • Getting there: Directly opposite Delamere Forest on the A556. Delamere train station is about 10 minutes’ walk (Mid-Cheshire Line, Chester-Manchester).

  • Distance/terrain: 1.2-mile wildlife trail; mostly flat with some uneven ground. Formal garden areas are very accessible.

  • Opening hours: Sunday-Thursday, 9am-5pm. Closed Friday and Saturday – plan accordingly.

  • Dogs: Welcome in the grounds on a lead.
