Mother’s March Magic

Good Morning Cheshire! 👋

Mother’s Day takes centre stage this weekend, with plenty of ways to treat mum across Cheshire – from afternoon teas and river cruises to creative workshops and countryside lunches. If that’s not your thing, there’s still loads happening across Cheshire this week.

Let’s dive in!

🎉 What’s On In Cheshire

🗓️ Fri · 13 Mar

🎤 Jason Fox: Embrace The Chaos
Fri 13 Mar, 7:30pm, Parr Hall, Warrington
Less polished motivational fluff, more hard-earned stories and a live Q&A from someone who’s actually done difficult things. One for people who like their talks candid and high-energy.

🎩 Mayor of Knutsford Charity Ball
Fri 13 Mar, evening, Cottons Hotel & Spa, Knutsford
A black-tie fundraiser with a three-course meal and entertainment, raising money for East Cheshire Hospice and Knutsford in Bloom. More dressed-up community occasion than stiff civic do.

👻 Phantoms after dark!
Fri 13 Mar, 4pm-7:30pm, Norton Priory Museum & Gardens, Runcorn
Norton Priory’s ghostly installation gets a moodier after-hours spin, with the lights turned low and the medieval spaces feeling even more atmospheric. Properly good for a March evening out.

🎬 Chester International Film Festival 2026
Fri 13 Mar onwards, Storyhouse, Chester
CIFF starts this Friday and runs across the week with films, shorts and special screenings, so it’s a handy one to dip into if you want something cultural without defaulting to theatre again.

🎻 Vale Royal String Orchestra
Sat 14 Mar, 7pm, St Peter’s Church, Little Budworth, near Tarporley
A Baroque programme in a village church is a solid change of pace if your week’s been noisy. Small-scale, local and likely to be a lovely setting for it.

🎶 Salt Works Sessions: Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman
Sat 14 Mar, 7:15pm, Lion Salt Works, Marston, Northwich
A cracking venue and a well-liked folk duo is a strong combination. This feels like one of those under-the-radar gigs that ends up being better than the flashy headline stuff.

Sat 14 Mar, Chester Cathedral, Chester
If you’ve somehow not seen it yet, Saturday is your best bet for catching it before it wraps on Sunday. It’s one of those installations that really does feel different in person.

💎 Hidden Gem: Raw Head Walk (Sandstone Ridge)

If you want a proper Cheshire walk with big views and a bit of adventure, Raw Head delivers. Sitting on the Sandstone Ridge just south of Bickerton Hill, the highest point on the Sandstone Ridge, and the reward is a sweeping panorama across the Dee Valley, Welsh hills and miles of border-country farmland.

This circular route feels properly “out there” compared to many Cheshire walks. You’ll climb through quiet woodland, emerge onto open heath and sandstone outcrops, then reach the trig point where the views suddenly open up. On a clear day you can see deep into Wales, which always surprises people who assume Cheshire is flat.

The descent drops you through peaceful countryside lanes and fields before looping back toward Bickerton. It’s a really satisfying walk – long enough to feel like a proper outing but not so big that it takes over the entire day.

Route details

  • Distance: ~5.5 miles (9 km)

  • Time: 2.5-3 hours

  • Start point: Barracks Lane car park (near the Cheshire Workshops), Bickerton

  • Terrain: Woodland trails, field paths and a short steep climb to the summit

  • Difficulty: Moderate

Good to know

  • The climb to the top is short but steep – decent shoes recommended.

  • Parts of the route can be muddy after rain.

  • Sheep graze in some fields so keep dogs under control.

Post-walk pub stop

You’re perfectly placed for The Pheasant Inn at Higher Burwardsley, a brilliant countryside pub with one of the best beer gardens in Cheshire and cracking views over the Peckforton Hills. Ideal reward after the climb.
