🗓️ DATES FOR THE DIARY
🎄 Don’t forget our handy guides for Christmas Light Switch-Ons and Christmas Markets across Cheshire.
Rugged red sandstone, wide-open views and kid-pleasing sandy paths – Bickerton Hill is a brilliant, low-faff mini-adventure. The ridge looks across to Beeston and the Welsh hills, with wind-gnarled pines and pockets of heath that feel wonderfully wild.

Pick up the Sandstone Trail waymarks (little footprints) and follow the ridge to a big viewpoint; curious kids can poke around earthworks from an ancient hillfort on a short detour. It’s an easy route to tailor: out-and-back for little legs, or a longer loop if everyone’s flying.
Best in crisp weather for huge skies; in summer the heather pops, and in winter the sunsets here can be spectacular. There are no facilities on the ridge, so pack snacks and layers and make a pub stop afterwards.
Practical bits
-
Start/parking: Gallantry Bank car park by The Bickerton Poacher (CW6 9AY), or National Trust Bickerton Hill car park off Goldford Lane (CH3 9PX).
-
Distance/time: 2.5-4.5 miles depending on route – allow 60–120 mins at family pace.
-
Grade/terrain: Easy-moderate; undulating sandy/rocky paths with short steeps and steps. Not buggy-friendly.
-
Dogs: Welcome; keep on leads near livestock and during ground-nesting bird season (spring–early summer).
-
Nav: Follow Sandstone Trail waymarks; OS Explorer 257 is handy.
❤️ Why we love it: A wild-feeling ridgeline, story-rich hillfort, and sandy paths that kids will adore.

That’s it for this week.
